I work on flow batteries for grid-scale energy storage.  Grid-scale storage is critical in allowing intermittent renewable resources like wind and solar power to be more reliable.  For example, a large battery could enable the storing of excess solar power during the day, to be discharged at night.  I work on identifying and characterizing small organic molecules for use in such a battery, and optimizing the design of these batteries to improve their storage capacity and output power.
